Dismantling A Workover Derrick

Early Oil History Of Oblong Vicinity

On July 31, 2001 the start of dismantling this workover derrick in Salem, Illinois began.
This derrick was used in the Salem oilfield for pulling a 3,800 foot Salem well.
This derrick is about 104 feet tall. And 12 feet wide at the top. The field was found in 1938.
This unit was donated to the museum by
Citation Oil Company, Houston, Texas.

It is one of three still left in Illinois.
This unit will be dismantled and moved to Oblong and reassembled at the museum.
